Instagram finished 2018 with explosive growth, clocking out the year with a record-breaking one billion active users per month. That growth hasn't slowed in 2019, and now the social platform is evolving into a place that isn't just for friends and influencers, but also a vibrant e-commerce platform. While the social network has always been a strong way to showcase products, the app built on this strength with the launch of its Shopping on Instagram feature in March. The new functionality allows users to browse and purchase products without ever leaving the platform.

The new shopping capabilities are a brilliant addition considering 60% of users discover products on Instagram, and 75% of those users will take action on those products, which includes visiting a brand's website.

The reason Shopping on Instagram works is because it diminishes a seller-heavy environment and allows users to discover the products they want in an immersive experience that's already familiar.

Instead of heading to a traditional site that's full of banner ads for sales and intrusive product suggestions, Instagram's shopping function gives users more control over which products they browse while simplifying the purchase process.
